#DigCitCommit: Building a Culture of Digital Citizenship

I am a little behind the times with this one, but in 2019 the Digital Citizenship Commitment campaign (DigCitCommit) was launched. One of the goals was to provide teachers with the tools to teach digital citizenship. In today’s interconnected world, digital citizenship is more than a skill, it’s a necessity. Digital citizenship is more than just buzzwords it is an important movement to teach students about responsible, ethical and positive online behaviours.

The campaign called on people to “commit” to being thoughtful digital citizens. Cultivating values like empathy, critical thinking, and respect online. The people who embraced #Digicommit, acknowledged the importance of explicitly teaching these issues.

As a teacher there are several digital commitments I can make. To teach my students the safe and respectful use of technology. To teach the positive aspects of technology. To model the do’s of digital citizenship. To encourage students to counter cyberbullying. To help my students understand that our online presence matters.

Personally I can commit to continuing to grow and learn. To put my iPad down more often so I can better balance my screen time.
